Kaspersky software replaces itself in the US
Users of Kaspersky antivirus software in the United States have noticed that their software has self-deleted. The program has been replaced by a lesser known "UltraAV" product.
The reason for the replacement lies in the recent ban on Kaspersky in the United States. The government there placed Kaspersky's software on the blacklist this summer. New Kaspersky antivirus software is not allowed to be sold, and from this month, the company cannot release any more updates. This is something of great importance for a security software.
In response, Kaspersky decided to switch its American users to UltraAV, an American provider of security products. The change occurred automatically and without significant notifications. Users started their computers and noticed that Kaspersky antivirus had been removed and replaced. Users on Apple and Android platforms will automatically download the new software.
The switch is noteworthy because UltraAV is a relatively unknown maker of security products. Unlike Kaspersky (despite recent allegations), Kaspersky has long had a reputation for providing the world's most robust security against malware and viruses. UltraAV, a seemingly small company from Boston, seems to have suddenly gained a significant number of clients. It is, therefore, a question whether these clients are aware of the security implications.
