TerraformGenerator for Minecraft: Enhanced Vanilla World Generation

TerraformGenerator is a Spigot plugin that replaces standard world generation with custom biomes, reshaped terrain, and redesigned structures. It is built to provide an enhanced vanilla feel rather than a kitchen sink of unrelated features. The plugin is free and will stay free, with a premium version also available on Spigot that is the exact same thing. Support for development is encouraged via purchase of the premium listing.

The world is playable with all vanilla items obtainable. The author recommends thorough testing before deploying to a production environment. Pregeneration will take a while as the plugin generates more slowly than vanilla, making small mistakes difficult to fix later on. TerraformGenerator must be used when a world is first created. Existing worlds will not be regenerated into TerraformGenerator terrain because Minecraft has already saved those chunks. If it is pointed at a world that already exists, old chunks will keep their original terrain.

Overview

TerraformGenerator is a world generator plugin that aims to provide an enhanced vanilla feel. It is designed for survival gameplay and focuses on changing existing world structures rather than adding an unrelated set of new buildings. The result is that familiar locations still make sense, but they are usually larger, more detailed, and more dangerous.

The plugin is compatible with plugin-compatible servers such as Spigot or Paper. It requires a new world. Native major Minecraft version is listed as 1.21. As of version 24.0.0, for Minecraft 1.21.9 and up, the build process only targets Paper by default.

The project is in an Alpha stage, meaning some core features are not implemented yet. A list of known issues and to-dos is maintained in the project documentation. The world should be playable to an extent, though it is not recommended to put it on any production environment that has strict requirements because support can be bottlenecked.

Design Philosophy and Vanilla Preservation

TerraformGenerator focuses on changing existing world structures rather than adding an unrelated set of new buildings. Familiar locations still make sense, but they are usually larger, more detailed, and more dangerous.

Vanilla feature preservation is a priority. As far as possible, all new major vanilla worldgen features have a high priority in development and will be added.

Designed for survival, all important structures behave in a similar way to allow a seamless transition from vanilla gameplay. Structures can also spawn mobs like Guardians and Pillagers.

The plugin does not try to add a giant list of unrelated features, which is useful if the goal is simply a better overworld instead of a kitchen sink with commands attached.

Biomes and Terrain Enhancements

TerraformGenerator includes many custom biome styles. Some are quiet building spots, others are strange terrain showcases, and a few are clearly designed to make players stop and stare for a second before placing the first crafting table.

Improved biomes can be explored, as well as new biomes added by the plugin. Some vanilla-inspired biomes still appear, but they are reshaped to match the plugin's world style.

Birch forests, plains, and normal forests may include altered trees, larger mushrooms, rocky details, or different local features depending on where they generate.

Muddy lowland areas often appear near water. These regions have mushroom-like trees, wet terrain, and limited vegetation. They may not be the best base location for everyone, but passive mobs can make them useful for farms.

Cherry grove areas are brighter and more scenic, with large pink trees spread across open terrain. These biomes work well for decorative builds, garden paths, shrines, and other designs that benefit from color. Rivers and scattered boulders often add more shape to the area.

Structure Improvements

TerraformGenerator focuses on changing existing world structures rather than adding an unrelated set of new buildings.

Improved structures include better dungeons like Mansions, Strongholds and Pyramids that allow for more interesting exploration and gameplay.

Villages become more complex, often with stronger walls, compact layouts, better paths, farms, and buildings that feel closer to a medieval settlement than a few houses scattered across a field. Loot areas may also be packed into tighter spaces. Villages become larger and more fortified.

Pillager outposts are upgraded into more interesting combat locations. Expect more enemies, better environmental detail, and containers worth checking. Watch your step, since traps can appear around these structures. Outposts feel more like real points of interest.

Desert pyramids can become much larger than their vanilla versions, with extra rooms, traps, underground areas, and loot opportunities. Some versions may even include a central boss encounter, making them a real adventure instead of a quick sand excavation job. Temples can become much more involved than the usual quick loot stop.

Installation and Build Process

TerraformGenerator requires a plugin-compatible server, such as Spigot or Paper. It also needs a new world.

The guide explains how to install TerraformGenerator on a Minecraft server, generate a new world with it, use it with or without Multiverse, and find the configuration files that control its behavior.

Download the plugin first, then upload it to the server's plugin folder. TerraformGenerator must be used when a world is first created. If you point it at a world that already exists, old chunks will keep their original terrain.

The source code is available on GitHub. Build instructions are provided.

git clone https://github.com/Hex27/TerraformGenerator.git cd TerraformGenerator gradlew buildProj:shadowJar

The jar at buildProj/build/libs/TerraformGenerator{some version}.jar is the plugin.

For version 24.0.0, for Minecraft 1.21.9 and up, this command will only build for Paper.

To build for Spigot, you must:

  • Run Buildtools with --remapped for --rev 1.21.9 and likely for every subsequent version
  • Change the gradle command to

gradlew buildProj:shadowJar -PincludeSpigot=true

If this gets too cumbersome, the buildscript may be changed to allow a flag for building just the latest version.

Version Compatibility and Requirements

Version support has changed over time.

Version Minimum Minecraft Notes
TerraformGenerator v13.0.0 1.18.2 Does not support anything below 1.18.2
TerraformGenerator v12.0.0 1.16 Use for 1.16, 1.17, 1.18.1
TerraformGenerator v6.0.0 1.16.5 Does not support anything below 1.16.5 anymore
TerraformGenerator v24.0.0 1.21.9+ Builds for Paper by default
TerraformGenerator [1.21.10-26.2] 27.0.1 1.21.10 A generator that augments vanilla world generation

For 1.15.2, the version released on 23rd Feb 2020 is the recommended version, as it fixes an itchy spigot issue.

Commands and Administration

There are commands, but they are developer commands and only available via /op. Try not to use them unless you understand what they do.

TerraformGenerator includes commands that can help server owners locate custom terrain and structures. These are mostly intended for administrators and operators, not regular players.

Performance and Production Considerations

The world is playable with all vanilla items obtainable, though thorough testing is heavily recommended before deploying to a production environment.

Pregeneration will take a while as the plugin generates more slowly than vanilla, making small mistakes difficult to fix later on.

As of now, it is in an Alpha stage, meaning some core features are not implemented yet. A list of known issues and to-dos is at the bottom. However, the world should be playable to an extent, though it is not recommended to put it on any production environment that has strict requirements because support will be bottlenecked.

TerraformGenerator is free and will stay free. There is a premium version that is also on Spigot, but that version is the exact same thing. Do consider buying TerraformGenerator to support development.

Conclusion

TerraformGenerator delivers an enhanced vanilla experience by reshaping familiar biomes and structures into larger, more detailed, and more dangerous variants while preserving overall vanilla playability. The focus on survival-friendly changes, improved structures such as mansions, strongholds, pyramids, villages, pillager outposts, and redesigned biomes creates a world that feels fresh without abandoning Minecraft's core systems.

The plugin is designed for new worlds on Spigot or Paper servers, requires operator access for its developer commands, and generates more slowly than vanilla, so pregeneration planning is essential. Version support has evolved with Minecraft releases, with newer versions targeting 1.21 and later, and older builds maintained for legacy versions. Building from source remains possible via Gradle, with Paper as the default target for recent versions and an option to include Spigot.

For server owners seeking a better overworld rather than a feature kitchen sink, TerraformGenerator offers a coherent augmentation of vanilla world generation that keeps item obtainability intact while making exploration more involved and rewarding.
