Chinese Scientists Successfully Treat Type 1 Diabetes Through Self-Generated Insulin After Stem Cell Transplant
The patient's organism began producing insulin on its own, according to a report in the journal Cell.
Chinese researchers successfully treated type 1 diabetes by transplanting stem cells from the same patient. Ten years later, her body started generating insulin of its own accord.
Before the transplantation, the stem cells were modified. The patient reported that she is no longer troubled by sugar fluctuations and even can eat sweets now. However, she will still be under medical supervision for five more years.
This procedure was also performed on two other patients, with results to be announced in November.
