Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe Series: Installation, Operation, and Technical Specifications

The Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe Series comprises a range of ventilation fans designed for recreational vehicles (RVs) and similar applications. These fans feature multiple operational modes, including exhaust, intake, and automatic control via a thermostat. Installation requires a specific roof opening size and adherence to sealant compatibility guidelines. The series includes models with both manual and remote control operation. A one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects.

Installation Procedures

The MAXXFAN Deluxe Series requires a roof opening measuring 355mm x 355mm for KI models and 400mm x 400mm for KI40 models. Prior to installation, it is necessary to verify the existing roof opening size, either by measuring a current opening or by testing the fit of the MAXXFAN’s interior garnish trim ring. If replacing an existing vent, all old roof sealant must be removed for a minimum of 50mm around the opening.

Installation proceeds in several steps:

  1. Place the MAXXFAN into the roof opening and trace a pencil line around it to verify the seal area. The fan’s hinge must face the front of the vehicle.
  2. Apply a continuous strip of butyl tape or equivalent caulking to the underside of the flange, covering the screw holes.
  3. Disconnect the vehicle’s main power supply before connecting the MAXXFAN’s electrical wiring. Using the provided 16-gauge insulated connectors, connect the vehicle’s 12-volt power to the two MAXXFAN power wires located on the driver’s side of the unit. The black wire, identified with a (+) tag, must connect to the vehicle’s positive (+) supply. Incorrect polarity or voltage could damage the fan and void the warranty.
  4. Center the MAXXFAN in the opening and secure the flange to the roof using the sixteen provided screws, inserting them into the raised ring dimples. Avoid overtightening to prevent cracking the flange.
  5. Remove any excess caulk and apply a daub of sealant, such as Dicor self-leveling lap sealant, over each exposed screw head. Additionally, apply a 5mm bead of sealant along the entire outer edge of the flange.
  6. The interior garnish trim ring requires trimming to fit the specific roof thickness. Measure the distance from the vehicle ceiling to each corner of the MAXXFAN control plate. Due to roof slope, measurements should be taken at each corner. Cut the garnish ring 6mm to 12.5mm longer than the measured dimensions at each corner.

Operational Features and Controls

The MAXXFAN Deluxe Series offers several control options, depending on the model. Keypad controls are standard, and remote control models are also available.

Keypad Controls

The keypad provides access to the following functions:

  • On/Off: Controls the fan’s power state.
  • In/Out: Selects between air intake and exhaust modes.
  • Auto: Activates automatic operation based on the thermostat setting. The green LED illuminates to indicate Auto mode. The factory default thermostat set point is 26°C.
  • Arrow Keys: Used to adjust the thermostat set temperature in Auto mode, increasing or decreasing it by 0.5°C per press. The fan emits a beeping sound to confirm the setting. Holding the key for more than 3 seconds resets the thermostat to 26°C.

Remote Control Operation

Remote control models include a wall-mounted cradle for storage. The remote control duplicates the functionality of the keypad controls.

Thermostat Operation

In Auto mode, the fan speed automatically adjusts based on the cabin temperature. As the temperature rises, the fan speed increases. If power is removed from the MAXXFAN, the thermostat will reset to the factory default setting of 26°C.

Technical Specifications and Considerations

The MAXXFAN Deluxe Series is designed for use with nominal 12-volt DC systems and requires a circuit capable of accommodating the additional electrical load. The fan is suitable for roof thicknesses ranging from 25mm to 90mm; additional thickness may be required for roofs thinner than 25mm.

The design requires a clear roof area around the fan, free from obstructions such as air conditioners or storage boxes, due to the location of the exhaust/intake louvers. The serial number is located on the fan control plate under the insect screen frame. The insect screen must be in place during operation.

Warranty Information

AIRXCEL, INC. warrants the MAXXFAN Deluxe Series against manufacturing defects for one year from the original date of purchase, provided the original sales receipt is retained. The warranty does not cover damage resulting from acts of God, misuse, improper installation, or accidental damage. Labor and freight costs associated with warranty claims are not covered.

Sealant Compatibility

When installing the MAXXFAN, it is crucial to use a caulking or sealant compatible with the plastic flange and the roof surface. Materials containing solvents such as Xylene, Toluene, Methyl Ethyl Ketone, Acetate, or Acetone must be avoided, as they can damage the flange. Polysulfide (Thiokol) type sealants should also not be used. Consultation with the caravan manufacturer is recommended if there is any doubt regarding sealant compatibility.

Conclusion

The Maxxair MAXXFAN Deluxe Series provides a versatile ventilation solution for RVs and similar vehicles. Proper installation, adhering to the specified roof opening dimensions and sealant guidelines, is essential for optimal performance and longevity. Understanding the operational features, including keypad and remote control functions, allows users to effectively manage airflow and cabin temperature. The one-year limited warranty offers protection against manufacturing defects.
