La Gard 39E Electronic Combination Lock: Setup, Operation, and Features

The La Gard 39E is an electronic combination lock designed for security applications. It offers programmable features, multiple operational modes, and user management capabilities. The lock supports up to nine users in addition to a manager, and allows for combination changes, time delay functionality, and external signal integration. Configuration can be performed via the keypad, and the lock offers options for silent alarms and dual combination modes. This article details the setup, operation, and features of the La Gard 39E, based on available documentation.

Lock Operation

To open the La Gard 39E, a valid Manager or User combination must be entered. Upon successful entry, the unit will signal twice. Within four seconds of the double signal, the lock can be opened by rotating the keypad clockwise or turning the handle. An invalid combination entry results in three signals from the unit.

Changing Combinations

The combination for each user, including the Manager, must be changed independently. To initiate a combination change, the existing combination must be entered and the last digit held until the unit double signals twice and the LED remains illuminated. The “0” key is then pressed, followed by the entry of the new combination twice for confirmation. This process must be performed with the door open.

User Management

The La Gard 39E allows for the management of up to nine users, in addition to the Manager. The Manager has specific privileges, including the ability to open the lock, change combinations, enable/disable users, delete users, set time delay values, and audit the lock’s activity.

Checking User Status

To check the status of a user, the Manager combination must be entered and held until the unit double signals twice and the LED stays on. Then, the number 7 is pressed, followed by the user number (1-9). The unit will signal as follows:

  • One signal: User is active.
  • Two signals: User is disabled.
  • Three signals: User is available.
  • Extended signal: User is unavailable.

Adding/Deleting Users

To delete a user, the Manager combination is entered and the last digit is held until the unit double signals twice and the LED stays on. The number 3 is then pressed, followed by the user number (1-9). The unit will signal twice. Pressing the user number will remove the user and their combination from the lock, while still allowing the user feature to be activated. If a mistake is made during this process, a 30-second wait is required before repeating the steps.

Programmable Lock Features

The La Gard 39E offers several programmable features that can be configured to suit specific security needs. These features include various modes and external signal options.

Modes

The lock supports multiple modes that can be selected and combined:

  • Silent Alarm: When enabled, this option sends a signal to an external alarm system through the LA GARD Alarm Box (P/N 2789NC).
  • Dual Mode: If enabled, two combinations are required to operate the lock. Both the Manager and one additional User must be active for this mode to function.
  • Time Delay Override: When enabled, User 9 can override the programmed time delay. User 9 must be active for this feature to work.

External Signals

The lock can be configured to respond to external signals, requiring the LA GARD Alarm Box (P/N 2789NC) for functionality. External signals can be configured to:

  • Disable lock opening with a valid combination.
  • Override the Time Delay function. This option is only available if enabled using setup software.
  • Enable the Remote Override function. This option is only available if enabled using setup software and with Lock code level 39E v1.09 or higher.

Time Delay Functionality

The La Gard 39E includes a programmable time delay feature. The delay period can be set from 1 to 99 minutes, and the open period can be set from 1 to 19 minutes. If the Time Delay On feature is not selected, this functionality is inactive but can be enabled later using Manager Instructions 732.018.

Combination Length

The lock allows for a combination length of six to nine digits. However, to maintain VdS Class 2 and EN 1300 Class B certification when the duress alarm feature is used, a combination length of seven digits or longer is required.

Setup Instructions

The La Gard 39E can be configured using the keypad only (Manual Setup). To activate the lock and freeze the configuration, the Manager combination must be changed. The lock operates in an Active state once the Manager combination is changed.

LED Indicators

The LED indicator on the lock provides visual cues regarding the lock’s status:

  • LED stays on: Indicates the lock is in setup mode, awaiting further input.
  • Double signal: Indicates a valid combination entry.
  • Three signals: Indicates an invalid combination entry.
  • One signal: Indicates a user is active when checking user status.
  • Two signals: Indicates a user is disabled when checking user status.
  • Three signals: Indicates a user is available when checking user status.
  • Extended signal: Indicates a user is unavailable when checking user status.

Conclusion

The La Gard 39E electronic combination lock provides a robust security solution with programmable features and user management capabilities. Its keypad-based setup, multiple operational modes, and time delay functionality offer flexibility for various applications. Proper configuration and understanding of the lock’s features, as outlined in the available documentation, are essential for optimal performance and security.
