Russia Develops Flash Drive with Unprecedented Security
Experts from the Information Security Department of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI) have developed a flash drive that has an integrated authentication system that allows for the recognition of specific users, as well as a limited range of devices on which it can be read. If you attempt to read the data directly from the microchip, an automatic masking system activates. An opportunistic malicious actor will only see a meaningless string of characters.
The developers claim that access to the data can only be obtained by administrators and users who are able to define the circle of persons and devices that have the ability to perform certain manipulations with information.
The initial installation of "user" and "admin" statuses occurs using special software that is launched directly from the flash drive. The software is stored in the memory of the device, and it is impossible to delete or overwrite it. The software has two special consoles - for the administrator and for the user. Here, the question arises about how many administrators and users the flash drive can have? One administrator and one user. In personal use, one person can combine these two roles, while in corporate use, these statuses are better separated.
The authors of the project note that such flash drives are convenient to use in closed networks of enterprises, where it is important to preserve information within the organization. It is planned to start mass production of such devices, and they will be created strictly using domestic components.
