Huawei Plans to Step Away from Windows for Its PCs

The next generation of the Chinese tech giant's personal computers and laptops would switch to its own HarmonyOS, according to Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei's consumer group, in an interview on Weibo.

In this interview, he also states that HarmonyOS Next, the new version of the operating system, has a kernel built without Linux and will not run Android apps.

Huawei's development of its own operating system has been accelerating in recent years. The company was placed on a U.S. blacklist and is increasingly restricted from collaborating with American companies such as Google (which releases Android).

HarmonyOS is already prevalent on the company's newer smartphone models (although these devices are often not available for purchase in Europe). Now, it's also time for the company's laptops and desktops, which form a smaller market than smartphones for Huawei: according to Canalys, Huawei holds about ten percent of the PC market in China.
