Tesla is preparing new batteries with dry cathodes for Roadster, Cybertruck, robotaxis, and other vehicles
Tesla plans to release four new versions of its own battery for Cybertruck, the future robotaxi, Roadster, and other electric vehicles, according to Reuters and The Information.
Currently, the company, led by Elon Musk, buys a large portion of batteries for its electric vehicles from other companies, including Panasonic Energy and LG Energy, while trying to ramp up production of its 4680 battery elements in the United States to reduce costs and increase profitability.
The development of the 4680 battery has faced difficulties: the company loses 70% to 80% of the cathodes during testing production compared to manufacturers of conventional batteries, which lose less than 2% of their components due to manufacturing defects.
According to Reuters, last year the company also tried to scale up the production of 4680 batteries with dry coating, but faced a slow production rate.
Tesla plans to implement dry cathodes in Cybertruck batteries by mid next year. The company plans to produce between 2,000 and 3,000 Cybertrucks per week using the dry coating technology.
It is expected that Tesla will unveil the robotaxi next week.
