Dahmers reign as the No. 1 Netflix TV show is over (for now at least) as a new thriller series The Watcher has climbed straight to the top spot less than a week after its debut on the streaming service.
Given that Dahmer was selected as the second-highest-viewed English language Netflix show last week, this is no significant feat.
Both the two shows are linked as both Dahmer and The Watcher were created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Falchuk previously worked on Glee and Scream Queen, but he did collaborate with Murphy to create an astounding horror/thriller series. A couple of shows also includes performers.
What is The Watcher about?
The Watcher, like Dahmer, is based on a true story. An article (opens in a new tab) that was published in New York Magazine in 2018. It sparked the tragic events that devastate a New Jersey family after moving into their dream home.
Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale embark on a TV series that stars a married couple who is moving to a new house as a living nightmare when they are threatened by horrifying letters from an unknown stalker."
As if receiving unolicited mail was not enough of a reason for the couple to begin second-guessing their living situation, strange neighbors make matters worse and several sinister sequences that have the pair convinced they are being monitored.
What do critics say about The Watcher?
The Watcher may have rapidly reached the top of the Netflix Top 10, but its huge display has been bleak. The show currently scores just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes (opens in a new tab), and its audience score isn''t much better at 44%, a far cry from Dahmers'' ratings.
Angie Han of the Hollywood Reporter (opens in new tab) was pretty cutting, declaring it an unforgettable true story but a forgotten miniseries. If you are looking for pure camp, The Watcher will entertain you for an hour or so before youre yelling at it to leave your lawn.
Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com received another bad write-up: [Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan] might get you to watch, but they didn''t take the time to make something worth remembering. And Variety (opens in new tab)s Daniel DAddario criticised the show for coming up short in the surprises department.
Stuart Heritage of the The Guardian (opens in a new tab) compared the show favorably to Dahmer and suggested that fans of Murphy''s previous works will likely enjoy The Watcher. If you like [Murphy''s] shows, you will love this. If you agree, then you will be surprised. That''s why, according to Heritage.
Should you stream The Watcher?
While The Watcher is certainly not his best-received effort to date, his position in the Netflix Top 10 would suggest that viewers are generally interested in the series despite its disappointing reviews.
The Watcher is a show that you may probably consume for a week on a budget. While its critics claim it has a lot of issues, it isn''t a particularly significant time investment, and it''s also a number of twists and turns.
Halloween is just two weeks away, so if you want something with a sinister flair then The Watcher might be exactly what you''ve been looking for. Of course, if you have had your fill of Murphys shtick then you''ll likely want to steer clear because The Watcher is certainly not attempting to reinvent the mystery thriller genre.
