I wrote about the forthcoming Google Pixel Tablet a few days ago, and I was particularly impressed by its Google Home integration: Google''s tablet is equipped with a magnetic charging hub that turns your tablet into a smart home interface and adds speakers. Apple appears to be doing similar in the iPad range 2023.
According to Bloomberg''s Mark Gurman, who has an impressive track record in preparing for future Apple products, Apple is attempting to include similar capabilities on the iPad as soon as 2023.
What''''s Apple working on for your smart home?
Apple was previously accused of fabricating a smart home device such as a HomePod with a screen or an iPad with a speaker hub. However, Gurman now claims that Apple is collaborating on a "an iPad docking accessory that... would perform substantially of the same thing."
I''m using my iPad already with my Hive smart thermostat and Hue smart lights, and the new iPadOS 16 smart home controller is a much improved smart home controller. Having a dock that would automatically switch to home mode or simply prop up your iPad for FaceTime calls would be fantastic, and magnetic docking would mean one less cable sticking up my sofa. It takes not long before you wonder why anyone ever put up with cabled connections at any time.
Apple might change its mind completely, ban the product altogether, or go in a completely different direction, as I hope this one pans out. It''d be nice to see some new ideas to make life a little easier.
