The iPhone 14 Pro Max is absolutely no exception. However, YouTuber PhoneBuff (opens in a new tab) decided to investigate, pitting the iPhone 14 Pro Max in a drop test against one of its main competitors, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

When you have two devices with dual-glass facesplates, neither one is going to undergo a drop test without taking any risks. Especially when youre dropping both devices onto concrete, from a height of about 5 feet, the question is whether the iPhone 14 Pro Max vs the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra drop test will see Apples unique durable materials come out on top.

On paper, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the edge on the S22 Ultra. It uses stainless steel instead of Samsung''s Armor Aluminum, and has a flat display instead of the curved edge screen.

On top of that, the iPhone 14 Pro Max has the Ceramic Shield, an exclusive version of Gorilla Glass that Apple believes is the toughest glass on any smartphone. Its been around since the iPhone 12, and appears to have improved. Of course, the Galaxy S22 Ultra does not have a lot of money on materials, but is also designed to support Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on the front and back.

Drop Test 1: Back-facing drop

The iPhone 14 Pro Max''s very first test, with a back-facing decrease, failed to show any difference. Apple has used dual-ion glass that doesn''t appear to be nearly as strong as the S22 Ultra. However, the damage is considerably less severe than the iPhone''s back.

The decrease even managed to strew the sapphire glass on the front camera, even if it had no effect on the quality of images. PhoneBuff claims that this is because of the 14 Pro Maxs camera, which is slightly superior to the iPhone 13 Pro Maxs.

Drop Test 2: Corner drop

The Apple''s favor comes after the corner test. While both phones suffered damage to the corners, the S22 Ultra appeared to have much deeper dents and chips on its back. However, the corner drop did not do the iPhones back glass any more favors, with glass cracking and coming away on the affected corner.

Drop Test 3: Face drop

Both the 14 Pro Max and the S22 Ultra were damaged by shattered screens. However, Samsung came out much worse for wear, with a lot more cracks covering more of the screen while the iPhones was damaged to the top right corner.

FaceID remained unchanged as anticipated, and the S22 Ultras in-display fingerprint scanner stopped reading PhoneBuffs thumbprint. None of this will hinder the fact that you need an expensive screen replacement, but at least the iPhone demonstrates that it is in better condition for the future.

Final drop: Front on steel

The final drop, sweeping straight onto steel, was utterly distressing. Both displays are less affected, especially on the S22 Ultra, which now has some dead pixels and even more cracks. Both versions of the Pro Maxs are still intact to a single corner, although they are more widespread.

As with the sapphire glass from cameras, the rear glass was in even worse shape. This caused some flaring in the camera, which was particularly hazy with the front-facing selfie camera.

Which Galaxy S22 Ultra vs iPhone 14 Pro Max is tougher?

PhoneBuff declared the contest a tie, but it appears that the Ceramic Shield was doing a much better job than the Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. Despite its wide selection of options, it''s clear that the ceramic Shield was not going too much.

PhoneBuff appoints a second iPhone 14 Pro Max as a whole, with a protective case. That phone suffered no damage, and the case itself only seemed to suffer minor flaws. The lesson here is that no matter how durable your phone is, it will never be as good as protecting it with a case.
