With the PICO 4 VR, Meta Quest 2 has just gotten a new competitor

With the PICO 4 VR, Meta Quest 2 has just gotten a new competitor ...

We just bought our first VR headset of the fall, but it isn''t the Meta Quest 3.

The PICO 4 is a virtual reality headset that is most immediately competing with Meta Quest 2, but it has some features that make it more compact than Meta''s current VR headset. pancake optics is a key feature, and the next-generation lens technology is capable of getting flatter lenses and a more compact headset design. It''s a feature we are currently anticipating in the Meta Quest Pro.

Unless you have ever had the opportunity to get your hands on the PICO 4 right away, in thirteen European countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, and Korea. The VR headset will begin at 379 or 429 for a 1628GB of storage. There are also plans to launch in Singapore and Malaysia later this year. Pre-orders will be made on September 23.

PICO 4: Specs

The PICO 4 comes with 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of storage. This is a departure from the PICO Neo 3, which only included 6GB of RAM. However, PICO believes that improved cooling systems should be a factor in improving performance despite the same changes in CPU.

The PICO 4 makes some strides, at least on paper. The resolution per eye rises forward to 2160 x 2160 pixels per eye. This should result in a noticeable difference compared to the PICO Neo 3s 1832 x 1920 resolution. The field of view is also increased to 105 degrees, which is a significant improvement compared to many current-gen headsets.

The pancake optics do provide excellent functionality, although by themselves they do not necessarily provide a better display. This is especially true given that the battery on the PICO 4 is a small disadvantage to the headset, which claims to be substantially less ergonomic.

PICO 4 versus Meta Quest 2

The PICO 4 specs suggest a better headset than the Meta Quest 2. The display resolution is significant improvement compared to the Quest 2''s 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye resolution, but the PICO 4s'' 105-degree field-of-view outclasses the Quest 2.

The two headsets are quite similar. However, Quest 2 may have an advantage. First, the battery life for each headset is two to three hours (technically PICO 4 is 2.5-3), so there is a possibility that the Meta Quest 2 performs better on the face. However, PICO 4 claims that its more ergonomic design might make its headset more comfortable.

PICO 4: Outlook

The PICO 4, in particular, has a significant advantage is its access to the US market. Since the two headsets have similar price points, the PICO 4 might be the better value of the two.

This could be detrimental to devices'' ability to succeed. The greater the ecosystem has, the greater developers will want to develop apps for it. It remains to be seen whether missing out on one of the world''s largest VR markets (opens in new tab) will damage that. It doesn''t because the PICO 4 is like the competition Meta requires to increase innovation.
