Upcoming Phones With Android 13 Might Need Seamless Updates: Mishaal Rahman ...

Pixel smartphones are now available, and OEMs are already working on updating their handsets with the latest Android software. However, these companies will have to adopt the Seamless Updates feature for new Android devices that ship with Android 13 if they want to get a GMS (Google Mobile Services) license. Samsung is one of the most well-known companies in the world of mobile technology. It is to be noted that the feature has been discovered since the first Google Pixel smartphone in 2017.

According to an Esper senior technical editor, Android 13''s virtual A/B requirement would introduce Seamless Updates functionality to other Android devices. In the case of a non-A/B mechanism, Android shuts down and boots into a dedicated recovery environment to update the update. Throughout, OTA updates are downloaded and applied in the background while Android is running. After a quick reboot, the OS update is finally done.

While eliminating some of Google''s shortcomings, Seamless Updates can be paused or restarted by the user as per their convenience. Several features include a "failsafe" feature that will allow you to return to the previous OS version when the update is broken. These are just a few of Google''s improvements, which have been implemented on the first-generation Pixel smartphone.

Rahman claims that A/B updates are better than non-A/B updates. However, the downside is the massive amount of storage that is required for using OTA updates. He added that a "virtual" A/B system solves the storage problem. While the required storage is still more than the non-A/B option when using OTA updates, it is still lower than what is required for an A/B system.

Samsung is yet to introduce Seamless Updates to its smartphones. If the Seamless Update becomes mandatory, Samsung will have to implement it as soon as its rumoured Galaxy S23 smartphone series. The South Korean company has improved its reputation in the software updates department, giving monthly updates to its handsets on a regular basis, particularly the flagship models.
