Thunderbolts isn''t a name everyone knows, but it will be. Today, at the D23 Marvel event, we got a lot (though I wanted more) and this upcoming Marvel Phase 5 film is the biggest news of the day.
Thunderbolts, which is expected to be the summer 2024 blockbuster film, will follow some fairly common and smart terms. And that''s all tied to who''s in the cast. The official artwork at D23 (which Marvel shared as most of the cast took the stage) is the sort of murderer''s row of scene stealers that might and should be considered a movie''s ultimate pleasure.
I hear you ask, who are the Thunderbolts? Why should I care? Well, dear reader, that''s what I''m here to explain.
The cast of Thunderbolts characters appears to be fantastic.
All photos said it all, including one shared by Jamie Jirak (opens in new tab) of ComicBook.com. This film has a who''s who of people who are certain to annoy each other. This film, thanks to a Marvel (opens in new tab) post, we can confirm who has been published so far.
Taskmaster was shown in the art, but Marvel''s post didn''t include whether or not Olga Kurylenko will be reprising that role.
Yes, we''re getting a film in which Yelena and her adoptive father Alexei are back, and if that''s not enough, Bucky and John Walker have to work together. When you have all of the above, Julia Louis-Dreyfus'' Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is attempting to make them all coexist?
Hats off to Marvel. It feels like they discovered another way to do the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films, where a collection of shortcomings must work together. Consider this Marvel''s The Suicide Squad. James Gunn''s version, not the original.
I have gone outside the cast alone to see how this movie will be fantastic. Sure, I am thinking all of this because I''ve seen both Black Widow and Falcon & The Winter Soldier, as well as MCU projects that even I''m not 100% behind.
Since he is the reason why they''re called the Thunderbolts, it should be noted that William Hurt would have probably reprised his role as Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross.
The release date for Thunderbolts and the MCU timeline are all set.
Thunderbolts will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024, just after Captain America: New World Order (May 3, 2024).
These are the last two pieces of Marvel''s Phase 5, which will be followed by a TBA fall 2024 release and Fantastic Four on November 8, 2024.
Thunderbolts potential plot
There is no official synopsis yet. Right now, I''ll go back to discussing The Suicide Squad, because that''s all about being the best movie possible for finding Thunderbolts.
The Thunderbolts'' cast (save for don''t-call-her-Val) is a group of mixed-up people who may do some damage. It appears that someone, likely Ms. Allegra de Fontaine, has recruited all of them to do some dirty work. This is likely to happen on one of a few occasions. Either they are being blackmailed or (as seen by Yelena''s interactions with her new boss) getting paid well for it.
The MCU has shown in such projects as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and She-Hulk, but it''s not entirely answered. Thunderbolts might demonstrate the uglier side of survival in this current world.
Honestly, people, today we got a lot of Marvel stuff, but it was all stuff we knew about in total detail (Secret Invasion) or curiosities that don''t do enough for me (Werewolf by Night).
Thunderbolts may be the best new crossover MCU film we''ll get for a while, but I''m just amazed by these shortcomings.
