Your iPhone 14 might reduce its carbon footprint thanks to an iOS 16 surprise feature ...

Apple still found a way to help us with a new feature to its iPhone software even after its release during WWDC 2022 in June.

Apple will launch Clean Energy Charging, an iOS 16 program that should reduce the carbon footprint of your brand new iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro. This program is done by optimizing charging times for situations where the energy grid is using cleaner energy sources. This program will only be available to US users.

The information we have is quite vague at this point. For example, there are still no indications when this feature will be available, whether your power grid is using cleaner energy sources or what cleaner energy sources are. Apple has also not discussed if Clean Energy Charging will be available on all iOS 16 devices or limited to newer iPhones.

While Clean Energy Charging works, it is still better than nothing if it reduces your carbon footprint in any way, especially since you are not paying additional for the capability.

Other features coming to iOS 16

While a lot of iOS 16 features are now live when you download iOS 16, there are still some new features that have not yet been identified as part of the software update. Most of these features were announced during WWDC 2022, but Clean Energy Charging was the only feature still to come that was not discussed until recently.

The biggest iOS 16 feature is probably the iCloud Shared Photo Library. This feature has actually been released in the developer beta, but the next version is still coming. This means that anyone can share and edit photographs, which makes sharing a lot easier and less enjoyable. Check out our guide on how to create an iCloud Shared Photo Library so that when the feature does arrive, you already know exactly what to do.

Live Activities will be available in the future iOS 16 update. This way, you can keep an eye on sports scores, see where your Uber (or Uber Eats) is, and more. It was one of the most anticipated iOS 16 features that is awaiting software updates from third-party apps.

Finally, the last feature in this autumn iOS 16 update is the support for the Matter smart home standard. This smart home connectivity standard is supported by Google, Apple, and Amazon, and is aimed at ensuring that your smart home devices work together, regardless of the manufacturer. Although this may not be the most beneficial feature of iOS 16, this will make a significant difference.

If you want to get the most out of iOS 16, there is probably no better way than to upgrade to the iPhone 14. Make sure you check out the latest deals on iPhone 14 preorders so you can save when you make the switch to the latest iPhone.
