As the headset was left in the hotel room, the Meta Quest Pro will launch ahead of the Apple headset ...

The Meta Quest Pro headset will be released next month, and it is anticipated to have several features similar to the upcoming Apple headset, which will be released early next year. We already knew the name, and it now appears we know what the device and its packaging look like, thanks to a careless employee.

A sample of the headset, its controllers, and retail packaging were left in a hotel room, bringing back memories of an Apple engineer leaving an iPhone 4 prototype in a bar.

Facebook virtual reality headsets

Back in 2016, Facebook launched its first virtual reality headset, the Oculus Rift, which was priced at $600, and needed to be tied to a PC. It was followed by a new version, the Rift S.

Facebook''s launch of the Oculus Go began VR a whole lot easier and cheaper in 2018, with pricing starting at $199. This whole standalone unit sold over two million units in its first year or so, and was terminated in 2020.

The Go evolved into the Oculus Quest, a standalone VR headset, as well as Rift games in stuck mode. Pricing for this and the next Quest ranged from $299 to $499.

Meta Quest Pro left in hotel room

The planned launch of the device was never a secret: Meta last year revealed that it was developing a new high-end headset under the codename Cambria. It was revealed by developer Steve Moser, who found a reference to the productin the iOS app.

Zectaruiz Gaming, the gaming video company, posted a low-quality video of the headset and its controllers in retail packaging. Appropriately enough, the video was on Facebook (though the platforms are notoriously vile video compression may explain the quality).

Kevin Beaumont, a security researcher, posted the video on Twitter that the device was left in a hotel room.

The packaging and the finish indicate that this is the final version, rather than an earlier version, although the box was not labelled Engineering sample.

The headset is black plastic, with gray surrounds for three cameras on the front of the device. These are expected to allow the Quest Pro to mix both virtual reality (VR) and virtual reality (AR).

Similarities to expected Apple headset

The Quest Pro and Apple headset are expected to have a lot in common:

Pricing is one benefit, however. Some Apple Headset reports suggest that the first-generation model might cost as much as $3,000, while Meta is said to sell its hardware at cost or even at a loss to make money on the apps. Apple has called this out as hypocritical.

Apple is said to be developing three headsets. The first of these is expected to be the most costly, and will be released early next year. Reality Pro may be the name.

Apple is developing three new headphones, titled N301, N602, and N421. The first headset that Apple will unveil will likely be called Apple Reality Pro. This will be a Mixed Reality headset, and will eventually be the company''s high-end competitor to Metas'' upcoming Quest Pro []

The N602 model will be the first model, and it may be a bit lower cost [while] the N421 model is Apple''s long-held dream of augmented reality glasses.

The Apple Glasses product is believed to be about five years old from its launch.
